Artificial Intelligence as a New Scientific Method: What the AI4X Roadmap Reveals

Artificial intelligence entered the scene first as numerical support, then as an assistant for data analysis. Today, according to the new AI4X Roadmap, we are moving into a completely different phase: AI is becoming a structural component of the scientific method itself

For nearly a century, scientific progress has relied on a delicate balance: human intuition, mathematical models, and increasingly sophisticated instruments. Artificial intelligence entered the scene first as numerical support, then as an assistant for data analysis. Today, according to the new AI4X Roadmap, we are moving into a completely different phase: AI is becoming a structural component of the scientific method itself.

This is not the usual rhetoric about automation or “AI replacing scientists.” The point is deeper. AI does not take over research; it expands the kinds of questions scientists can ask, makes previously unreachable theoretical spaces accessible, and allows hypotheses to be tested at a speed no traditional laboratory could match.

From Modeling to Discovery: The Conceptual Leap

The AI4X document highlights a central idea: modern AI models are no longer just data-processing tools, but “inference engines” capable of generating new scientific hypotheses.

In chemistry, the ability to simulate complex materials without physically synthesizing each variant is accelerating research on new batteries, catalysts, and polymers.
In physics and climate science, AI makes it possible to analyze chaotic dynamics that escape traditional equations.
In the life sciences, algorithms explore protein configurations or cellular interactions that would require years of wet-lab experiments.

Science changes when the limits of what can be imagined and verified change. AI is pushing both boundaries outward.

The Autonomous Lab: When AI Becomes Part of the Experiment

The concept of a “self-driving laboratory” is no longer science fiction. Robotic systems integrated with predictive models are already able to:

  • autonomously select which experiments to run
  • analyze results in real time
  • update their hypotheses
  • design the next round of experiments

This does not eliminate the scientist. On the contrary, it frees researchers from repetitive work and positions them where they make the real difference: defining the problem, interpreting the results, and guiding the ethical dimension of discovery.

AI becomes an extension of human capability, not a replacement.

A New Role for Human Intuition

The Roadmap stresses a point often overlooked: the more powerful the systems become, the more valuable human intuition becomes.
The challenge is not to “give up control,” but to understand how to collaborate with tools that can explore millions of possibilities in seconds.

Humans remain the agents who:

  • define the theoretical framework
  • judge which results make sense
  • decide what is ethically acceptable
  • interpret what cannot yet be measured

The future of science is a partnership, not a handover.

From the Lab to Society: Ethical and Political Implications

If AI accelerates scientific discovery, it also accelerates its consequences:

  • new energy technologies
  • novel therapies
  • advanced materials
  • climate-prediction algorithms

This creates enormous responsibilities. The pace of discovery risks outstripping the ability of institutions to regulate, evaluate, and integrate these advances. The AI4X Roadmap calls for oversight mechanisms that do not slow research, but guide it in transparent and reproducible ways.

Conclusion: An Expanded Science

AI does not “think like a human,” and may not do so anytime soon. But this is not a weakness; it is an advantage.
AI explores spaces our intuition cannot see, while we provide direction, meaning, and responsibility.

This is not the end of the scientific method. It is its expansion.

The new era is not about machines replacing scientists, but about scientists working with machines that widen the boundaries of what we can know.
It is a subtle yet radical shift: not a tool, but an epistemic partner.
